:D

Guess what?

...

I'm writing a book. With pages!

And there will be pictures on the pages. And words. And maybe the pages will be really aerodynamic or something. I haven't really decided what all of the hi-tech features are going to be yet. It's tough to choose.

Anyway, I've been wanting to tell you guys about this for a very, very long time, and now I finally can!

Touchstone (a division of Simon & Schuster) will tentatively release my book in Fall 2012, which sounds like it's a long time away, but really, it's only the gestation period of two slightly premature babies. And if you're a time-traveler, then it can be as soon as you want it to be. It can be now!

If you're not a time traveler, here are some helpful time-frame comparisons to make the book's publication date seem not as far away:

So really, it isn't actually that far away.  And I'll keep updating here in the meantime.

The book will contain roughly 50% new material.  The other 50% will be posts I've published on this site already, but some of the posts that did not previously contain illustrations will be illustrated.  It will be basically just like my blog in book-form (illustrated short stories, guides, etc.), but it will have at least an attempt at an organizational structure, probably.

There isn't really an appropriately climactic way to end this announcement, so here's a picture of some shapes:

That's excellent! But not super surprising. I'm just happy to be in the first 1000 comments this time.

Even cooler would be after the print copy comes out, if you can do like the book Our Choice and have an interactive, multimedia version that runs on i-things.

ZOMG I WILL TOTALLY PURCHASE THIS BOOK IF IT IS OUT AND I HAVE MONIES TO SPARE FOR IT AND AM THINKING ABOUT IT ALL AT ONCE. If all three of these things happen all at once, which is less likely than you'd think, then I will totally buy the book :D
(Usually it's the having money and thinking about it congruency that doesn't happen. Right now I can't afford it...but it's not out yet ANYWAYS and in the future, I will have money and I will think about it but all those rare alignment periods will go to waste because it STILL won't be out...but eventually, the planets will align...)
Anyways. ^_^ yay!

I don't know for sure what happens in a metal can, but I can tell you what happens in a glass mason jar: over the course of multiple years they very slowly turn darker and darker orange. You can still eat them, but they gradually become less flavorful and appealing. Five-year-old canned peaches are still yummy, but they're a dull orange color, almost halfway to light brown. Ten-year-old canned peaches are brown and don't taste very good (albeit still better than the nasty picked-green taste-like-cardboard ones you can buy at the store).

Eventually (and we're talking like thirty years here) they turn black. I haven't tested edibility at that point, but based on extrapolation from observed flavor degradation over various shades of brown, I rather doubt the black ones would be very appetizing.

You better be selling your book in Norway too! I have not been this exited since I bought one of those pokéballs with a miniature pokémon and candy inside and got a pikachu (which is nearly impossible). If you still are wondering about how exited I am, I can tell you that when I saw that tiny, little plastic pikachu I lost total control over my body and threw the pokeball with the candy AND my precious pikachu so hard in my boyfriends face that he lost control over the car and hit a tree.. :) Well, a tiny tree who tipped over when we hit it, but it still counts.

A book. A book! Yay! And just in time before the world ends in 2012. SUPER! I will put my copy in a nuclear radiation fire proof bag, so that after the world goes to crap, aliens will find your book and know what life was like here on earth. Ali lives forever!!

I've long thought this should happen. I worried about what I would do if your site went down and I couldn't read "The Party" or "The God of Cake" any more. I hugely look forward to it and of course I'll buy a copy. Hurrah!

Congratulations, Allie! I'm so glad to see that a lot of you really funny internet-type people are finally getting the credit you deserve (like you, Zach Weiner, Kate Beaton, David Thorne, etc.).
