Wild Animal (The Simple Dog Goes for a Joy Ride)

My simple-minded dog recently went on an unplanned adventure. Because the simple dog is so very simple, her adventure was alarming and horrible for everyone involved.

Even in her normal, familiar environment, the simple dog exists in a state of almost constant confusion.

She also appears to have very little control over what she is doing or why she is doing it.  For example, the other day, she was standing in the middle of the room just staring vacantly. Then she started turning in circles like she was preparing to lie down.

But instead of completing a few rotations and then lying down like a normal dog, she got stuck in the repetitive motion and couldn't stop turning slowly in place.

She is definitely not the type of animal that would thrive in the wild.

Unfortunately, she managed to escape one day while we were out walking, and she very nearly became a wild animal.

In the park where we were walking, there is a large horse statue.  We had passed the statue many times without incident, but for some reason, on that day, the simple dog became highly alarmed by it.

No one expects their dog to instantaneously develop an extremely specific fear of horse statues, and I was unprepared for her reaction, which was to sprint powerfully in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, what the simple dog lacks in cognitive capacity, she makes up in ground speed, and her sudden fleeing yanked the leash from my hand.

I chased her all the way across the park and into an adjacent neighborhood. She ran into a partially fenced yard and, when her forward trajectory was interrupted by the fence, she began to gallop in giant, crazy circles just out of my reach.

I'm fairly certain she had already forgotten what she was running from and had no idea what was going on, but there she was - propelling herself in endless loops around someone else's yard.

After several minutes of tearing around in circles, she felt compelled to take off running in a straight line.   She didn't know where she was going, but she was going to go there really fast.

I have spent a truly impressive amount of time teaching the simple dog how to respond to her name. I distinctly remember the self-congratulatory feelings I had when I thought I'd succeeded. I've done it, I thought.  I've overcome all of the obstacles and taught this animal her name, and now she will return to me like a falcon whenever I beckon her.

But as I watched my dog disappear into the distance, I realized just how futile my efforts had been.

I spent the rest of the day frantically trying to find her.  I drove around calling for her on the off-chance that she would actually respond.  I stopped random people on the street to ask them if they'd seen her.  It started to get dark and I imagined my poor dog, lost and scared - completely unable to make sense of what was happening to her.

Finally, I got a call from a woman who had managed to catch the simple dog.  The woman said that she found the simple dog standing in the middle of the road, wagging her tail and barking at cars. She gave me her address and I drove over to collect my wayward animal.

When I got there, the simple dog was curled up in a little ball on a towel on the woman's floor. I walked over to her and she looked confused.

She had forgotten who I was.  She thought she lived on the towel.

She was wet and dirty and she stunk like she had rolled on a dead animal.  There were burrs in her tail. She had puked up a pile of half-digested grass onto the woman's nice wood floor and was attempting to re-ingest it.

Based on the evidence, her adventure went something like this:

I helped the woman clean up the mess that my disgraceful animal had created in her home, then I thanked her and called my dog to go.

The simple dog did not respond, so I picked her up and carried her out.

I was glad to have her back, even though she didn't know who I was.  I couldn't blame her for forgetting.  A dog who becomes terrified by the mere existence of a stone rendering of a horse is not a dog who is well-prepared to absorb hundreds of unfamiliar sights and sounds, and I reasoned that she was most likely still in shock. I can only imagine how overwhelming the whole ordeal must have been from her perspective:

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the simple dog had trouble readjusting to being at home in the aftermath of her big adventure.

Because of her cognitive handicap, the simple dog is at a unique disadvantage when it comes to coping with minor obstacles that most dogs would take in stride. For most dogs, getting a taste of freedom wouldn't be something that would cause a major shift in their perception of reality. But it absolutely ruined the simple dog.

She had only been outside by herself for a few hours, but the staggering amount of new experiences had crowded out all her memories from before the adventure.

As far as the simple dog was concerned, she had been snatched away from her life as a wild, towel-dwelling animal and transplanted to a strange wonderland filled with terrifyingly unfamiliar sensory bombardments.

We have experienced these episodes a few times before.  From what I understand, they are a pretty normal consequence of disabled-dog-husbandry, and are usually pretty fleeting. But this one was different.  This time, the precipitating incident had been so extremely, entirely mind-bending that the simple dog had actually forgotten how to be a domesticated animal.

We had to teach her how to use the stairs all over again.

Despite having been potty-trained for the overwhelming majority of her life, she started blatantly soiling the carpet right in front of us, as if she had no idea she was doing anything wrong.

She violently destroyed every toy she had - even her inexplicably-patriotic-themed squeaky owl toy, which is her favorite.

And after she destroyed her owl, she grieved.  And we had to sew it up for her to avoid pushing her any further into psychosis.

She forgot her name and how to sit and all of the various other things we'd spent so many hours carefully guiding her to understand.

We did eventually manage to re-domesticate the simple dog. She re-learned stairs and how to not pee in the house and how to respond properly when her name is called.  She may not remember exactly who we are, but she seems to accept that she lives with us now.  She even plays nicely with her toys.

But every now and then, she will stare wistfully out the window.

And through the window, she will see the outdoors.

And sometimes, when the shapes of the trees and grass and birds hit her brain in just the right way, she will feel the call of the wild deep within her soul.

And it will trigger a relapse.

I was especially happy that it was about the simple dog, those are my favorites because they remind me of my roomies dog who is insane and stupid, but we love Bubs anyway.

Thanks for another great post.

Your poor Simple Dog obviously has a very "rough" life...

We have a Simple Cat...she is afraid of large boxes or other inanimate objects that we bring home and leave in the living room. I thought she was the only animal who suffers from fear-of-large-mysterious-non-moving-non-sound-making-objects. Thank you for reassuring me that this is not the case...although I am so sorry that Simple Dog suffers from this malady as well.

Good luck with continued re-domestication project.

I am so happy you have written another post. They are labor intensive but they make us so happy!

You are good people to keep your simple dog and continue to work with her. So many would toss her to the refuse pile.

We had a simple one as well awhile back. He would go outside to pee then just stand there as if he didn't know where he was or what to do next. We would have to go out to the yard to rescue him.
He was a lovable mutt and we miss him.

Your renderings of the dog's confused minds are superb. I'm sure that is just what was happening to her.

Consider yourself fortunate that you dont have a dog with an extreme interest in hair. When I was 12 I and some friends had a sleep over. Zelda the perpetually 5 month old black lab woke up one friend, at the ungodly hour of 7 AM, by attempting to eat his massive Jewfro.
Also its nice to see you back. I was fearfully envisioning you on a street corner struggling to keep your dogs and boyfriend fed, and vainly attempting to find an unsecured wifi signal.

LOL "am dog" You are hilarious, Allie.
I have 2 dogs, one nearly as simple as yours. After the first Simple Dog post, we now like to imagine the random thoughts crossing her little mind (it's quite obvious when a thought crosses her mind, it's like the invasion at Normandy) with random words and noises. "Stink yay! Blue. CHASE SQUIRREL! Wag?"

We retrain frequently. He's currently back to hiding behind the couch.

My dog died last year. She also had some inexplicable epic journeys, but fortunately was smart enough to be only mildly annoyed at our inconveniencing her with a shower and time in her cage after she made friends with a live/dead squirrel.

Then the falconer gets to spend the night hanging out near the tree, hoping that his bird will come down in the morning.

I laughed outloud at work reading this. I love you and your stories! I have a simple dog that you seem to capture perfectly!

Oh, Allie! So happy to see a new post, and about your dogs! My favorite.
You know, they make drugs for dogs like her... I'm just sayin'...
I have a special needs cat, "special" pets are for sure the most entertaining. Awesome post, thanks for making me laugh before I have to commit my weekend to studying :(

My best friend just sent me a link to this post (extremely hilarious and I love the illustrations!). I also have a simple dog and she thought this was apt. I was unprepared for the simple dog, my first dog (only 4 years older) is a veritable genius comparatively. It took over a year to get over her fear of wearing a collar and walking on a leash. I still don't get greeted at the door (only by the older dog) and I'm not sure she in fact knows who I am when I come home each day. But she is a very pleasant beast and extremely sweet-tempered so I just pat her head and let her vacant stare fill me with love.

Simple Dog might have epilepsy with petit mal seizures. For Petit mal seizures, the seizure itself often looks like a dog staring straight ahead. It's the pre- and post-seizure behaviors that can be telling.

Symptoms can include:

"drooling, shaking, confusion, loss of consciousness, non-responsive, and loss of bladder control."

See: http://dogs.about.com/library/glossary/bldefpetite.htm

I am not a veterinarian - I've had four dogs, and three of them have had epileptic seizures. One of them, when he was post seizure, would walk in circles, not know his name, where he was, or who we were. Yet another dog only showed pre-seizure symptoms - he would hide under the basement steps, or if we were in the car, he would try to dig a hole through the floor of the car.

In my experience the condition can be treated with medication, changes in diet and exercise, or all three.

Hooray for simple dog! And hooray for new post!

Is simple dog by chance a greyhound? I have a greyhound and I find my experiences with her to be very similar to this. Last week she inexplicably decided that she should only have three legs and tried to chew one off. Now I have to explain to my neighbors that my dog is in a lamp collar because she is not smart enough to identify her own body parts and not eat them.

Like others on here, a new post is enough to make me do a happy dance. I've saved this for 3 days until I had my full attention to devote. I'm glad simple dog was found and semi-readjusted to your home. Hug her for me.

Weird coincidence: my friends called me Ali too, is short for Ailen because I'm from Argentina (yeyyyy!) -I don't know what that has to do with everything but... I don't know ._.

BTW my do is kind of stupid to, I can make her to sit when I say so, but she has en tremendous amount of guilt when she does something wrong, is hilarious.

Love Your Posts =)

I need to know if simple dog is an American Foxhound.........because I think we have simple dogs brother at our house! We even had a similar adventure with our dog.....only it was a garbage can he was afraid of, not a giant horse. It takes a good person to love a dog like that. :)

I continue to be amazed by your posts, Allie, and have learned not to be drinking a cup of coffee while reading them, lest I decorate my monitor from an explosion of giggles. Twice (Fish Almost Destroyed Childhood, God of Cake). This one, too, starts off funny, but evolves into surprise, terror, frustration, and, at about the "absolutely ruined" line, turned to touching and compassionate. Simple Dog really has a problem, and your story and artwork aptly describe it in vivid detail. In fact, that's what's so amazing about it, that you have so carefully tied together storytelling in words and art, from the points of view both of humans and a troubled dog. So, whatever you do and however you do it, please keep 'em coming!

I always though my dog was stupid, but he's not nearly that bad. though we havn't been able to teach him anything other than sit after a year. he slightly understands paw, but won't give it if you ask. only when he wants attention.
He dosn't really respond to his name either, when he escaped I had to hold my arms out like I wanted to give him a hug before he would come over (and he came running when he saw that.)

other dog is insanely intelligent.
we ran out of things to teach her. we would have her capable of turning lights on and off with floor switches, but she wasn't heavy enough to push it :(

really glad you found Simple Dog.

OMG - you dog and my dog must be the same animal...your drawing even looks like my Penny...she does the same things and disappeared in the same way as this dog.

Sometimes she stares at you vacantly seemingly forgetting who you are or will stare at an inanimate object and preceed to bark at it as if it were some intruder...like a vase with fake flowers.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for a blog that makes me laugh out loud until I can't stop! Sobered up a bit when I approached the end of this post, but the simple dog and I have one or two things in common and I will be perfectly happy again in just a few seconds...

This is actually kind of sad (in a depressing way) :( I hope your dog is okay now, at least it's going on the right road to recovery.

Although I do admit, the way you demonstrate your dog's brain process is hilarious XD

Hey Allie!

I recently discovered your blog and have already read every post. (Since this year you haven't really been active, I already thought that I would never be able to enjoy a "freah" post...)

I LOVE simple dog!!! Especially because she is EXACTLY the same as one of my dogs! even her apperences are very alike! We adopted her as an adult and think that her lack of intelligence is due an bad accident she (really) had. (She was runover by a car, fixed by a NGO and adopted by us)

I don't know about you dog, but mine freakishly lavishes me. We use to joke that the only thing she has in her very, very simple head is a framed picture of me upon a small table with a candle lit in front of it. And that we have to take extreme care so the picture doesn't fall over or the candle blow out. But we still love her very much!

Greetings from Rio de Janeiro!

I am a fairly new fan (but a diligent one, I have been systematically going back and trying to read all your posts from the beginning) and I LOVE your work. I make my husband and daughters (14 and 9) gather around and I get to read the posts out loud to them (the PG ones with lots of pictures, the older ones I read on my own, laughing out loud the whole time).
THANK YOU for sharing your talents with us!

Hey, it's me with the exactly same dog again.

I just want to say that I also know that "bringing up" such a dog can be difficult, sad and always demanding business. We just have to be very patient and loving, something your are obviously great at! Even with your ADHD. My brother has it too and sometimes cannot handle the dog...

Hi, I'm a totally random stranger who just found a link to this story.

Your art is lovely and the way you tell the story is hysterical, but, yeah, I'm crying too. Poor Simple Dog. You really are a wonderful carer. I'm really glad she has a loving owner like you to take care of her.

I feel like Dog and drunk-me must be kindred spirits. Her adventure as told through her perspective is all to reminiscent of my thought process (and sometimes ability to see) when highly intoxicated...

This dog is the definition of "too stupid to be allowed to live." I admire your patience, love and dedication in caring for this creature, even if I am wholly incapable of understanding it.

Allie, you are, quite easily, the funniest person I have ever had the fortunate experience of stumbling across on-line. I was weighing up the pros and cons of blogging while researching on the amazing internet thingy, then out of the clouds, SHAZAAM! HYPERBOLE AND A HALF!You were so funny I started blogging then and there. Also, being a grammatically obsessive individual, I like the Alot a lot.

I actually had an experience with my dog similar to the horse part.

When we first got our purebred beagle puppy a friend of the family gave us a cute water bowl for him that had a rendition of a dog, with a bird sitting on its head, staring out at the drinker. We had it for a couple years and for some reason it finally donned on him that there was a dog in his bowl looking back at him. He FREAKED, he barked at that damn bowl for 30 minutes in his distinctive Hound-howl while sloshing all the water out because he kept punching it. We laughed the whole time and took Polaroids of it.

So. Much. Fucking. Love. Simple dog and my dog would be besties...if only my dog didn't think she was a cat (she's a 70 lb hound). Hooray for simple-minded dogs!

I'm so happy you found her!
I absolutely loved the moving post (my dog too thinks at times he's magical) and this post was even with the grim subject of losing her as heart-warming as the previous post.

I also happened to just finish reading Call of the Wild for the second time around.
I'm sure Buck's feelings of longing to the wilderness do not even compare to the simple dogs yearning :D

I don't know if your simple dog really has cognitive issues or you're just trying to convey that she's dumb, but if she does suffer from that you should take extra care and precautions. Making a mockery of her problems is just stupid and mean. I usually laughed at your stuff, this just made me sad.

As a dog find your story gut-busting and I love the illustrations. I have a feeling that you are actually a dog masquerading as a person. You get right into the psyche of a particular type of dog that I've come across a few times. A dog this simple is not easy to find and it's rare for people to recognize it.

Great post and I look forward to more. For now I'll go back and enjoy some of the previous ones.
